24 JUNE TH SUNDAY
Promoted by Minehead Cycling Club and supported by Minehead Events Group (MEG) and dozens of the town’s businesses, town centre cycle racing returned after a gap of more than 20 years.  As part of the Festival of Wheels the day of exciting racing around the closed streets brought large crowds and a fabulous atmosphere right into the heart of the town.  With just one other event of this type in the southwest, riders aged from 6-60 were drawn from across the region and beyond, to race the traffic-free roads. Minehead Merlins were well represented and put on a great show, picking up several prizes, whilst other locals including Graham Collins and Ros Willicombe put on a great show in the senior races. Renamed the Minehead Grand Prix, this year includes the Elites and 1st Category riders to show off the very best in the region. And to encourage those new to the sport, the new GoRace event gives the chance to riders with little or no race experience to ‘have a go’.  To enter these and any of the other of the races, go to: https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/events/details/169988/Minehe ad-Town-Centre-Grand-Prix Race Director, Paul Butcher, expects more entries this year and is anticipating some spectacular racing.  “With the event now a part of the Southwest Regional Championships, we already have great fields for the under 14’s and under 16’s who will be racing for vital points.  Entries are already well up for the senior races too, and once again there’s a great entry from the local Merlins and club riders from the area. So plenty of local interest to entertain the crowds” For anyone who’d like to ride the course, there’s a mass participation Community Ride during a brief break in the action at 12.30.  Club chairman, Neil Arnold added “We hope to see as many people on bikes as possible, families, young and old.  We had 100 or so last year and I reckon we can double that.”  We’d also love to see those vintage bikes too, that have been gathering dust in the shed or attic for years. All races offer attractive prizes thanks to the generosity of the Minehead Town Council and local businesses, notably Singer Instruments, Exmoor Eye Care, Tanks Direct, and Neil Arnold Tyres. Other generous sponsors include Hinkley Point Community Fund, Brandon Hire, Morrisons and Minehead Garden Centre.
