Ride4All Grand Parade
Promoted by Minehead Cycling Club, this weekend the town centre hosts Round 4 of the British Cycling National Youth Series and welcomes 550 of the best riders in the country.
The top under 14’s and under 16’s compete in 4 races through Saturday afternoon and evening for the title of National Series Champion followed by a full day of competition for all ages on Sunday.
But it’s not all about competition! Around midday on Sunday there’s a more sedate ride for anyone with a roadworthy bike and helmet, to cycle around the same town centre circuit in the company of hundreds of other like-minded people.
Last year almost 200 people took part and this years target is to double the number. With so many cyclists in town for the weekend, together with their families and friends, an amazing spectacle is assured. Spotters will be about looking for a worthy winner of a mystery prize, kindly donated by one of the towns’ generous sponsors... possibly for the most authentic vintage bicycle in the peloton or the rider in period dress. Perhaps not a penny-farthing or a unicycle but certainly lots of tandems will be on show, kindly donated by Gateway Events’ Bill Howard.
But, vintage or otherwise, polished and gleaming or smothered in cobwebs from the garden shed, it really is a ride for everyone! Riders will assemble in the Event Village in Summerland Avenue Car Park at 12.10pm ready for the Grand Depart at 12.20.
